12:52 am - Disgusted but happy
I watched Angel tonight. It was good and despite Buffy having greatly improved this season, I consider Angel to be a bit better. This episode focused on Gunn, who being the only black character on either show, rather naturally gets less screen time then any of the rest. However, he doesn't get much less screen time than anyone else. Even better, this character has now had one romance and (in this ep) a one night stand, and in both cases, Whedon and company didn't feel the need to find a color-matched woman for Gunn to be with.

In contrast, Commander Sisko on DS:9 or Dr. Franklin on Babylon 5 (the only other two black characters on the sort of geeky adventure shows that I've watched in the past 5 years), both had appropriate color lovers, even if the lover was only on for one episode.

Yes, it's 2003 and inter-racial kisses are still considered mildly daring on TV. Dear gods, shouldn't we have gotten over that 30+ years ago. Still, this show is a step in the right direction in many ways. Perhaps the (hopeful) lack of protest by anyone but Klan members (who presumably don't watch Angel anyway) may give TV stations a bit more courage, or not.

Speaking of backwards looking people that have no place in the 21st century, have you seen the Supreme Court's discussion of the sodomy case:

Ah yes, Scalia, Rehnquist (and almost certainly Scalia's handpuppet Thomas) some of the most regressive people in the nation. It's a disgrace that they are on the court. At least wrt this case things won't get worse, and they may get better despite those bigoted dinosaurs.

I try to picture Klan members watching Angel, but I think their heads would explode long before the interracial stuff came up. Probably at the numerous demony things that keep happening.

I've got to admit, exploding Klansmen is an exceptionally amusing image :)

I've seen more interracial stuff on the more mainstream television I've been watching: stuff like CSI and Law & Order. And there was a particularly good bit on Miracles where over the course of an episode the main character, a white guy, fell in love with a guest character, a black girl. Things would've worked out fine if it hadn't been for the girl being dead.

On one hand, some of the shows you're watching, like Angel, have been daring, but other shows you mention which fall within your realm of tastes have been more conservative. It may be that if you were to expand your TV watching, you'd discover a wider variety of approaches to the interracial romance issue (among other things). Or not. Who knows...?

Thanks, I hadn't known that. Given that Angel will be about the only non-cooking or PBS/TLC/HIST/DSC show I'll be watching next season, it's likely time to expand my TV watching more.

OTOH, I am rather disappointed that the fannish shows aren't doing better. Back in the 60s Star Trek had the first interracial kiss on US television, and things haven't gotten much better in 35 years...
