In my previous post, I linked to a post that I made more than 7.5 years ago. I now have close to 3,000 lj entries spanning more than 8 years. Since I have no plans to move to any other site, I expect that if lj continues to exist for that long, I will likely be posting here for another 8 years - beyond that tech is changing sufficiently fast that it's difficult to say what I'll be doing. Having such an extended record of my thoughts and life is very nifty indeed, and w/o the social aspect I'm certain that I wouldn't be doing it, since a journal that no one but me reads holds no appeal for me.

I'm with you on the social aspects. If I didn't get comments I wouldn't bother.

It is a heck of a personal corpus to have assembled. It gives me hope that "the collected blogging of so-and-so" may actually be an interesting replacement for "the letters and miscellaneous papers of so-and-so."

I do political blogging in Finnish. For a while I figured that if I'd get enough posts written before next year's election, I could compile the best of them into a, say, 80-page pamphlet which I could then both sell to my supporters and hand out to people wanting to know what I was about.

Unfortunately it looks like I won't have enough time/energy to spend on either blogging or campaigning in time for that election, but I still like the idea.

Absolutely, I think this is likely true already and merely awaits the death of someone famous who has an extensive blog to be realized.
