|01:51 am - Worried about Occupy Portland tomorrow - come help|
The news about Occupy Portland is disturbing. The mayor (Sam Adams) has given the Portland Occupation until midnight on Saturday to leave. Unsurprisingly, they aren't planning on leaving. Just like when Bloomberg did the same thing at Zuccotti Park there are the three choices, only one of which is actually good.
In any case, I'll be down there this afternoon and will likely be down there at midnight, although I'm scuttling away fast if Adams doesn't change his mind. amberite will be with me and so might teaotter. If you are in Portland, come down to the Occupation tomorrow afternoon or evening, if there are enough people there and a strong enough show of support, my guess (or perhaps simply my hope) is that Adams will decided that he doesn't need the problems that will result from trying to displace that many highly determined people.
- The police clear everyone out fairly easily, at which point other mayors and other police in other cities are going to strongly consider doing the same. The press will also have a field day with this and declare the movement "over". For better or worse, this also seems the least likely option. I don't want this to happen, too many people across the nation have already been hurt in police actions against the OWS movement.
- There is violence - if some rumors (mostly being fed by a seriously biased mass media) say, and protesters attack the police, then the entire OWS movement will take a huge hit in public opinion and even more so in the press, and many other mayors will feel compelled to immediately and violently end their own occupations. If it's mostly or exclusively police violence, like on Oakland, then the movement as a whole gets some very good press, but at what cost. However, mostly police violence also means that the occupation will undoubtedly come back the next day, and Adams is sufficiently clue-ful that he likely won't try evicting them again.
- Like Bloomberg did recently, the Portland Occupation has a sufficiently large presence tomorrow that Adams blinks first and calls off the eviction. I have no idea if this will happen, I'm not even certain if Sam Adams knows if this will happen. I hope this happens.

Thank you dear one, Becca is staying home because she had a cold, but Alice and I will be there, and I'm bringing my excellent pocket video/still camera to make a record of whatever goes down (hopefully, nothing at all, or a celebration as Adams' gives in).
