03:06 pm - Musings on the fate of OWS
My entire adult life and much of my teen years has been lived under the conservative resurgence that started in the late 1970s. I've often hoped to see signs that the US was becoming less politically and economically repressive. Some people said we were seeing the end of this with the 1999 anti-globalization protests, I wondered myself if it was ending with the protests against the Iraq War that started in 2003, and now there is (or perhaps was) OWS.

Today, I read this post about how OWS looks to be the dawn of a new progressive movement. However, Zucotti Park has been cleared, and so have most of the rest of the Occupations, in what looks like it might have been a coordinated nation-wide effort.

It's clearly possible, and in fact likely that the entire OWS/99% movement will vanish from public consciousness within a month, and while there will be a small number of dedicated people still behind it, their impact could easily be the same as the Iraq War protests and almost every other general progressive effort of the past 30 years. It's far too early to tell, but it's also very difficult to believe that this time things will be different.

I think we're going to need a big push during the Democratic National Convention in September, the party could use a big kick to the left (and the Republican party could just use a big kick :)

There's good stuff potentially happening in CA right now. CSU's strike (one day/2 campuses) = tomorrow = good timing + hope.

The two Occupy movements in DC are still flourishing. And there are still Occupations around the world.

I'm very glad things are going well with Occupy DC. OTOH, the Occupy movement is about the US, and similar movements elsewhere in the world will have essentially no impact on US politics or the vast majority of US citizens.
