Currently half of US population counts as poor or low income (defined as people earning less than twice the poverty line). I knew the economy was in bad shape, but not quite thatbad. Meanwhile US politicians still talk about "American Exceptionalism" or the US as the "Land of Opportunity", as our nation increasingly looks like a developing nation in terms of both poverty and income inequality. I again wonder how bad things will need to get before a majority actually begins to seek to reverse these trends.

The question there is, how bad do things need to get in your average developing nation before there's a consensus on what to do? And how many of those nations could derail debates with appeals to staunch individualism and the Horatio Algier myth? |
