01:51 am - Musings on Movie Trailers
The trailers were also an interesting mix – The Avengers looks to be fun (especially with Joss Whedon directing it, since he's best at working with an ensemble cast, but the presence of only one female hero was also very noticeable – perhaps if this film does well Black Widow will get her own film (given that she's played by Scarlett Johansson, this seems like a definite possibility). I'd also love to see Wasp, She-Hulk, Monica Rambeau/Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers/Ms Marvel/Captain Marvel, or the Scarlet Witch join up to make the team a bit more balanced. Either Carol Danvers or Monica Rambeau seem like the best choices to me, but the Scarlet Witch could also work.

I also saw a trailer for what will clearly be a total train-wreck of a film – Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, which if the trailer is correct is about a wire-fu/wuxia Abraham Lincoln killing (or perhaps more accurately killin') vampires with an axe. This could have been a bad & cheap comedy, but it actually looked to be action-horror, which was simply ludicrous (much of the audience was rightfully giggling after that trailer). The fact that it's being directed by the director of the Russian films Night Watch and Day Watch is just going to make it more painful to watch – wow. I am baffled that this was made.

Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter is a really good book. If they keep the script to the style of the book it will do well.

It was done by the same guy who did Pride And Prejudice And Zombies.

I can't comment on the book, but this is the trailer I saw, and it looks to me like a very bad wire-fu action pic.

I think that's just a weird trailer to get dumb teenagers in seats.

The real plot of the book is that the Confederate slave owners are really vampires who have secretly created the slave trade in order to have an unlimited supply of humans to feed on.

Lincoln realizes this and gets into politics in order to end the slave trade so that people will stop being eaten. But to avoid panic he can't talk openly about vampires.

The best part of the book is when he decides to create the Emancipation Proclamation so that he can deny the South their most essential food source.

It gets interestingly into the idea of slave owners being blood suckers as a fun metaphor.

OK, that's pretty darn cool, and really surprising. The idea that a film titled Abraham Lincolm Vampire Hunter might be the most openly political film of the year is utterly bizarre, but I'm expecting many Republicans to have frothing at the mouth fits about how the film "defames the South". I'll definitely be seeing it unless it's unwatchably terrible.

As a side-note, I looked up more about the book and the film, and it sounds like a film about white guys saving the day for black people. Were there any black vampire hunters in the book (and perhaps more importantly, were there any that didn't get killed to motivate Lincoln)?

I fully agree with you about the Avengers: I was quite disappointed when I realized that the Black Widow would be the only female hero in the group. I was also further disappointed with her mostly eye candy appearance in Iron Man 2 *and* that she didn't get her own introductory movie. I'd love to see Jennifer, Monica, or Carol in the team, especially since they have similar power levels with Thor and Iron Man! However, there's a YouTube clip from the movie where Widow kicks ass, so I don't think she's going to be just eye candy which was one of my concerns.

I'm not entirely sure if Wasp's powers would work well on the big screen. She'd have to be in a lot of close ups and almost invisible in any team action shots.
