02:53 pm - Media Distractions
For the third time while listening to local radio, I heard three separate ads for three separate upcoming TV news spots of pedophiles (including one on pedophiles kidnapping children and holding them captive and another about on-line predatory pedophiles). What a ridiculous and vile waste of time. Given that the yearly number of child kidnappings not done by a close relative of the child (typically resulting from a divorce-related dispute) is in the low 100s nationwide, I'm betting that less than a dozen such abductions occur every year, in a nation of 300 million - making it only slightly more dangerous than being hit by a meteor. Of course, given that most child abuse of all forms comes from close relatives and almost all comes from close relatives, teachers, religious officials and similar trusted and regularly seen authority figures, I suppose hearing stories about lurking monsters waiting to abduct and abuse children serves as an excellent distraction from the actual realities of the situation.

There have also been several ads about some upcoming news piece about (undoubtedly imaginary or fabricated) terrorism risks from air-travel. I'm torn between thinking that this is something done on behalf of the airlines industry to attempt to keep people sufficiently afraid that they will put up with the annoyance and mistreatment that is now a standard part of flying, or if it's simply another attempt to distract people from larger issues with the Iraq war and the economy.

Obsessively morbid ads for news pieces about Anna Nicole Smith's death start looking less horrid in light of these sorts of ads - it's a small wonder that I avoid all TV news.

I don't think it's necessary to invoke any conspiracies to explain TV news. Television is about stimulating peoples nervous systems on a very gross (unsubtle) level. Fear and violence provide that stimulation very cheaply.
