01:44 pm - On Death and Jerry Falwell
I've seen a multitude of posts about Jerry Falwell's death, some meanly humorous, others thoughtful and wise. My own thoughts fall somewhere in between, but are not something I've seen expressed. I do not celebrate his death, for a variety of reasons.

The most important being that for me, no death is every a victory for anything but entropy. From my PoV, death is always pointless and terrible loss, and contains nothing ever worth celebrating, regardless of whether close friends or bitter enemies die. Part of my devotion to transhumanism is closely associated with the fact that I regard death as the ultimate enemy of intelligence and do not celebrate it. On fairly rare occasions (as I discuss here), death can be necessary, but for me, it is never something to take joy in.

On a far more mean-spirited front, in dying he remains a symbol. I would far rather that he lived and (like some many others of his ilk) have been caught in bed with some collection of prostitutes of a variety of genders and farm animals, and then to hear his statements of how he was going to these people merely to "get a massage". Each such incident helps discredit these people's ideas in a way that their deaths cannot. Now, he is beyond the reach of any such discrediting. Alternately, having him brought up on charges and then convicted of being involved in various forms of influence buying, which is almost certainly true, would also have been quite gratifying, and once again that is impossible. The leaders of the various reactionary movements are horrid, but their ideas are far worse and are held by many others - these ideas are the true enemy, not the people spreading them.
Current Mood: thoughtfulthoughtful

It's really hard to discredit someone who has claimed Care Bears are satanic and Teletubbies are gay role models aimed at toddlers. What can you really add to that?

Things like that discredit people like Falwell with everyone else but has little or no affect on how his followers see him. Catching such people with drugs and hookers discredits them with their followers.
