|12:16 am - For those seeking a 30 minute hate|
The talented and wise johnaegard posted a link to this thread on sexism in SF on the Asimov's SF magazine discussion boards, because he was appalled at what he saw. So was I, if you have any desire to either swiftly make your blood boil or to see exactly how deeply sexism remains embedded in sub-cultures that claim to have overcome that, read this thread. The post with the quote: Ayn Rand, a giant in philosophy is naturally one of the most (horridly) impressive, but it is only one of many - more 1/4 of the people posting there are utterly appalling. There are times that I loathe much of humanity - if you wish to feel the same, read this thread. Wow...
Current Mood: indescribable
Wow. Impressively loathesome.

As a sidenote, I love that icon.
You're welcome to keep a copy, as long as you attribute it however I did (ah... "by Dawny.50meg").
My blood couldn't boil because stupidity is tepid. I kept asking myself how many times these people were dropped on their heads as children, and why they were so ignorant of the times. I think a good scientific american subscription MIGHT remedy the problem if they can figure out that half the articles have girl geniuses. They might just assume that the chicks are just long haired hippie boys.
In my lab, half the people are women, and the proff who runs the lab is a freaking STAR who also has chldren. Take that! Be a star a brilliant star and bear children? The awesomeness!

I agree, and make my own blanket statement: seems like a bunch of white aristocrats sitting around philosophizing on the sad state of their women folk in total ignorant bliss. Talk about not paying attention.

Y'know, I'm open to the idea that there may be general differences in capabilities between Men and Women. Possibly there are fewer differences between males and females :P. Even if there is, you can't say that this trait or that trait is inherently better... it all depends on values. And ultimately in a liberal society it doesn't matter. People should be considered on individual merit.

Thanks for making a reply that takes this into account, and reminding me that the troglodytes are made of fail in more ways than one. :-)
Grrrr. More grrrrr.
Maybe when we've had a few centuries to undo the millenia of inequality we'll see potential realized. Right npow we're only getting the very tip of the iceberg.

Likely well sooner than that, humans adapt fast. However, even today there are stilll significant inequalities and barriers to women in many of the most higher status fields.
