01:45 pm - The future is now - two fascinating perspectives
Anyone who thinks that the technological changes of the last 30 years aren't exceedingly impressive could do worse than reading this post by Charles Stross where he considers explaining a particularly amusing news article to someone from 1977. We live in a world of miracles and wonders compared to the 1970s, however, they are very different miracles and wonders than the ones futurists and SF authors lead us to expect, a point that Cory Doctorow discusses far more eloquently than I ever could.

Edit: I just finished writing this, and on the radio I heard an add for Nike shoes that wirelessly communicate with an ipod to give you information about your running performance. It's not flying cars, but it sure is the future.

Hello! In from someone's friendsfriends. Bruno Maddox likewise wrote an article about writing science fiction in today's world in the August 2007 issue of Discover. I think it may be available online next month.
