I encountered two excellent links courtesy of lupagreenwolf:

The first is even more troubling than I had thought.
About one in five working American families can't afford basic needs, and many scrape to get by on insufficient income and government aid, policy researchers conclude in a report released today.

Many of these workers earn too much to qualify for "work supports" such as Medicaid and food stamps, while their employer-provided health insurance doesn't cover enough of their basic medical costs, according to the report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research and the Center for Social Policy at the University of Massachusetts.
I knew of this problem, but did not realize that the numbers of people affected were quite that high – once again the need for Euro-style social democracy where the government actually helps all citizens is made clear.

Also, I find it both ludicrous and an indication of the deeply sad state of science education in the US (which is the only first world nations where this sort of nonsense is widespread), but the issue is sadly real here, and Short Memories: AIDS Denialism and Vaccine Resistance is an excellent and thoughtful discussion of the issues involved.
Current Mood: thoughtfulthoughtful
