12:22 am - Comments on the Torchwood Season 2 premier (minor spoilers after cut)
teaotter and I saw the first episode of the new season of Torchwood tonight. It was quite good, definitely far better than the rather dubious Doctor Who Christmas special or in fact, most of the last season of Doctor Who. It wasn't up to the very high standards of the best of last seasons Torchwood, (They Keep Killing Suzy and Out of Time), but I'd put it 3rd after those two, and we both definitely enjoyed it. Perhaps most impressively of all, this episode was written by Chris Chibnall, who was responsible for all of the truly terrible episodes of first season, including both Cyberwoman and the truly dreadful finale. If he can do a moderately good episode, I'm eager to see what some of the better writers, like Helen Raynor or Catherine Tregenna have done. I'm definitely looking forward to this season more than I am to Doctor Who.

In any case, the degree to which Torchwood resembled Angel continues – the first season of Angel was fairly bad, with a few good episodes, and so was the first season of Torchwood. Then, they started the 2nd season of Angel off with a bit more comedy and less brooding and it was vastly improved. The same was very definitely true here. Of course, the appearance of James Marsters doing an absolutely fabulous job at playing a character who was definitely not a version of Spike, but who wasn't all that different, only served to help these resemblances. From the brief snippets of upcoming episodes, it looks like he'll be back, and I'd not be in the least bit surprised to see him joining the show in the 3rd or 4th season.

But, seriously, they should have just cut off his hand, right?
