01:47 am - High Traffic Area
I regularly write between one and (occasonally) three hours after teaotter goes to bed (which is normally between 11:30 PM and 1:30 AM). Prior to amberite going to China, occasionally I would have my cat DJ sit in my lap. Now, my lap is a high traffic area. Alice's cat Batty has decided that I'm his person, since Alice has been gone for several months and so he often sits in my lap while I type. Of course, DJ is a fairly jealous cat, and so he has been sitting in my lap far more often. Both because he's somewhat elderly (14) and because he's my cat, I put Batty down when DJ wants to get up in my lap - if I don't, I occasionally have both cats in my lap, typically facing in opposite directions. Thankfully, they are both fairly light creatures.

Somewhere between loved and recognized as an important marker of feline status :) Admittedly, this seems to translate into love for most cats.

Kitties are cute! May we see pictures, please? *pprrpprprprprprpr*

BTW, is Amberite OK, or is she stuck in the snow? I've heard about that storm in China.

I'll post pics in a few minutes. As for amberite, all was well when she emailed me on Monday, so I expect everything's fine.

You could make more space on your lap by getting a cat bed and putting it on your lap. My cat is very fussy about not sitting anywhere she can't stretch out to her full length, so I always put a cat bed on my lap since that's usually the only way she's comfortable staying on my lap for very long.

OK, now I know someone even more more cat-pecked than I am :) Thankfully, both of these two are perfectly fine with sitting in laps.

My cats have similar battles for lap, couch, chair, and just general cuddle space, especially when Rialian is on the couch. Sithreal has adopted Rialian as his favorite thing to lean against. The others sometimes allow this, and sometimes they emphatically do not (as evidenced by the swath of destruction they leave behind them as they chase each other out of the room). Two of the girls are currently skirmishing for chair (lap) space. I may need to add a piece of cushioned, lap-friendly furniture in the living room to ease the tension.

Heh--it's not uncommon for me to end up with both Sun Ce and Ember on my lap at once--thirty pounds of cat fighting for the best spot next to my belly.

I keep meaning to get what I consider the absolutely iconic picture of me -- laying on the couch, with four or five cats and dogs sprawled on me and the back/arms of the couch around me. It's not at all uncommon for me to have that many on me and within reach at once, and it's funny to watch them fight for space. Mushroom's favorite trick is to sit higher on my chest than the critter she wants to displace, and then gradually slide down until she's completely usurped the lap.
