01:52 pm - Yummy miracles of nature - morels in the garden
After a weekend with truly amazing weather, the clouds rolled back in and the temperatures dropped somewhat, but Portland was still determined to prove itself to be a wonder. Last night, teaotter and I found that we had eight morel mushrooms (which are simultaneously delicious and vastly expensive) growing near our garbage can. I harvested some, checked online to make certain that they were truly morels (they are, being completely hollow inside, there's pretty much nothing else they could be), I shall be fixing gnocchi with italian sausage and morel sauce tonight. With luck, they will return next year.

Morels growing Morels growing
Picked morels Picked morels

Nope. We've been doing a lot of work on the garden (mulching and adding manure to previously impressively barren soil), but the area around the garbage cans has been completely untouched.

that I really miss the guys that would show up at my parents' house with a bread-bag full of the things that they would sell for $30. Mind you, this was in the 80s but I still miss them.
