|03:11 pm - What Real Progress Looks Like|
Here's a detailed comparison of images and text from the 1963 & 1991 editions of the popular young children's book Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever. Look closely at a few panels – significantly more images of female characters in active rolls, positive changes in language (to both remove sexism and reduce the previously authoritarian & judgmental tone of some of it). This is what we've fought for made real – a generation of children reading books that are not all about dad goes to work and mom stays home with the kids. There's clearly more to do, but this is very hopeful. Words and images have power and shape thoughts and minds.
