04:26 pm - Personally valuable technological advances
My beloved teaotter got new glasses and had her eyes checked today. In this past, this was a fairly traumatic process, because she has a severe phobia about anything touching her eyes, and so the part of the exam that involves a camera touching her eyeball and looking into her eyes has always previously involved a serious and somewhat extended panic attack. This time, amberite and I went to meet her before the exam, and brought her a cup of chamomile valerian tea (which is a truly excellent calmative for Becca). However, this time the trauma was largely absent. In addition to the eye doctor being wonderful (to anyone in Portland, I highly recommend the Lloyd Center Sears optical department), technology has now improved sufficiently that people's eye's need to be dilated somewhat less than previously (at least in comparison to both Becca and my previous eye exams, which were in the late 90s), and most importantly of all from Becca's PoV - the cameras are now sufficiently good that they do not need to touch or get exceedingly close to the eye. The end result, was a happy and remarkably non-stressed Becca. An eye doctor who was both nice and did not in any way react badly to both Alice and I hugging and being affectionate with Becca when she came out only served to make the experience even better.
