10:22 pm - In DC + network oddities
After flying out of Little Rock AR as the insane hour of 6:55 AM, (having gotten up at 4:30 AM), teaotter & I parted ways with amberite in Dallas. The two of us flew on to the DC area, while Alice flew to visit her folks in NoCal. Things go well here, except that my parents are older and more frail every time I see them (they are in their mid 70s).

So far, the only major annoyance is since people (in general and around my parents house) have learned to lock their wireless networks, dialup is way too slow anymore, and my parents only have a single desktop computer, they don't have a wireless network. So, we brought along our wireless router (a gift last Christmas from tlttlotd). It worked perfectly when visiting Becca's family. Unfortunately, this place is mostly brick, lots of very solid brick. My parents' computer and cable modem are in an office off their bedroom. I can get a signal only in their bedroom, that office (which is accessible only from their bedroom), the hallway outside, and the (thankfully finished) basement, directly below that office. Everywhere else, the wireless signal goes from 4 or 5 bars to none in a matter of a few feet. So, it's basement interneting for me until Tuesday.

You realize, of course, that you're going to break Horror Movie Rule #1:

"Don't go into the basement!"

That's something of a problem where we are - the walls are notoriously poor for wireless wherever you go.

If I recall correctly there are a couple of coffee shops near your physical location which offer free wireless access. I highly recommend Stacy's in Falls Church.

Thanks. One of Portland's many benefits is that all the houses are made of wood, so wireless works amazingly well there.

I am glad you guys are going to be here. I will need family therapy, too.

*HUG* Btw, we could also watch the Doctor Who Christmas special if you two have it. I'll definitely give you a call if we have time to visit before Tuesday, but I'm not certain that we will.

Sadly, there is no real time to do so.
