04:35 pm - Court Victory
Today was our court date to try to get our $940 back from the evil management company. Their representative showed up and our first step was mediation. The management company representative was frighteningly efficient, corporate, and intimidating, and so it looked like it would be very difficult indeed to prove malice or bad faith (which would have been necessary to get double our money back (via penalties)). Becca did all the talking, a fact which pleased Alice & I no end, since Becca is vastly better at this sort of thing than either of us), and she did amazingly well. So, in mediation we said we'd agree to full payment + all of our court costs. The management company rep looked somewhat relieved and then offered us all that minus $120 (claiming fictitious carpet damage). Since we had no real desire to hang out at the courthouse for the next several hours and then spend who knows how long actually in court, to get only a small amount more than this, we took that deal. In one sense, I'm a bit disappointed (especially at losing the (admittedly small) chance to double our money), but I'm also exceptionally relieved to be done.
Current Mood: pleasedpleased

I would have asked to see the bill for the carpet damage. Not an estimate, the actual bill.

Congrats on the good results anyhow.

Whew. Very glad to hear of the end of that.

And certainly I would not wish to argue against Becca. :)
