12:21 am - Franklyn – An Interesting but Seriously Unsuccessful Film
Tonight, we watched the odd British film Franklyn (trailer here). I knew essentially nothing about it beyond the trailer, and found it to be an interesting mess. The scenes in Meanwhile City have laughably bad dialog, much of the rest of the film was muddled and jumbled, and the film would have had far more focus if they had made Emilia the protagonist and also made Peter her father, and the character of Milo was impressively useless and annoying. Aaron, pointed out that it was underneath all the muddle, a classic melodrama, with Emilia as the hero, John Priest as the villain, and Milo as the victim. Foregrounding this would have made the film far better. On the positive side, the scenes in Meanwhile City were visually stunning and gorgeously steampunk, and possessed a richness that made me think of Catherynne Valente 's writing. It's definitely not a film to spend much money to see, but it has points of interest in amidst the many problems.

Did you see it on video? Or is it in the theatre somewhere?

On video, it's been out in the UK for 3 months, but hasn't opened here yet.
