01:59 am - New Computer
Yesterday, my primary Christmas present from my parents arrived, a new laptop. My old computer was almost 5 years old, and I’ve been holding onto it until Microsoft came out with something better than Vista. Windows 7 takes some getting used to, but seems mostly harmless, which is all it needs to be. What I mostly notice is that my 4 GB RAM dual processor new PC is astoundingly faster than my 1 GB RAM single processor old one. Better yet, going for the pitiful 40 GB hard drive (purchased before I started putting music and movies on my PC) to one with what seems like unlimited space is exceptionally nice. The only downside is that this computer has a 15” screen rather than my old one with the 13” screen. I don’t care about the screen size, but the change means that the keyboard is approximately 1” wider, which takes some getting used to. I definitely prefer smaller laptop keyboards (which like that fact that I greatly prefer touchpads over mice makes me a serious oddity among most computer users).
The one notable difference from previous computer moves was how easy it was. Having several large SD cards around for use on various devices, I was able to move all of my rather large selection of material (9 GB of music, a couple GB of photos, & 7 GB of gaming stuff) over very rapidly. The single biggest aid was this excellent recent article about how to move your music from one computer to another with your ipod. Sharepod is typically mildly quirky freeware, but it worked like a charm and only failed to copy one of the 300 or so albums I had on my ipod. Also, a month ago, andrewducker recommended this wonderful application installer, which also made my job easier. In any case, I have a lovely bright purple computer that can burn DVDs incredibly faster than I previously could, and yesterday, when I had 2 flash drives each downloading multi-GB folders, while the computer was also simultaneously downloading one application and installing another, it was as fast as my old computer on a good day & with no load at all. Wow. Now all I need is for my latest RPG check to arrive, so I won’t be thinking about how much this gift cost and comparing it to my rather moth-eaten checking account.

Glad the application was useful!

I'm now firmly of the opinion that computers are "fast enough" for the vast majority of uses they have. It's practically impossible to buy one that can't play HD video at full screen while simultaneously doing thirteen other tasks.

I'm sure that there will be future tasks for computers that will force us all to upgrade (and games will always push technology to its limits), but for the moment I'm pretty damned happy.

Your parents got you a lovely purple computer? I didn't think they'd get you anything colorful! I thought they were technophobes?
