02:52 pm - Note on the Acceleration: Augmented Reality arrives
Take a picture on your phone, or even point it at a shop, and get data about the target. The Android phone app google goggles already does this. Now consider display glasses fitted with a camera and a more advanced version of this software - you get the option of clicking a link for everything you look at and indicate that you'd like a link to - look at someone to get their name and public bio, at a package of food, or perhaps even a menu at a restaurant to get it's ingredients or even to get a simple warning if it contains any that you are allergic to. Look at a wild-growing berry to see what plant it comes from & if it's edible, or at produce in a market to get nutritional info and recipe suggestions. This will all arrive in less than a decade, and the first bits are here now. Our world is on the edge of becoming far richer. I look back at how limited and difficult information access was before I could look up almost any bit of information I was interested in withing seconds and am very grateful for the modern age, and this takes that to the next level. We live in an amazing age.

Google Goggles is actually pretty mindblowing when you start playing with it. The location-aware searches are pretty interesting by itself: and Google's app seems to do a better job than a few of the others out there (Sherpa and Layars).

It's kind-of scary how much my Android phone is becoming my.. well, as Verizon's ad implies, my robotic right-hand man..

I have now lost my husband for the evening, as, a few weeks ago, he bought the HTC Hero and adores it. (And I'll be getting one sometime after Christmas.) :)

You will adore it and get to play with it, too. :)

Goggles isn't in the Appstore yet, but I'll be checking back every few hours to see if it is. This is going to be an interesting app to say the least.
