04:37 pm - Proof that we live in the future - laser-powered mosquito defense shields
Yes, laser powered mosquito defense shields. When I first saw this, I assumed it was a joke, but after looking are article in both an article in Engadget and in a longer piece in the NYT, I decided that it was real. The lasers used in DVD burners can be repurposed into anti-mosquito weapons - the street (or at least some wacky geeks) indeed finds new uses for technology:
Using widely available and common electronics parts, Intellectual Ventures has made lasers which can kill mosquitoes mid-flight -- at a rate of about 50 to 100 per second...

The laser's software determines the size and shape of the target before deciding whether or not to shoot, so, for instance -- it wouldn't take aim at a person or a bumblebee. The lasers could be used to protect hospitals and clinics in areas with high mosquito populations and in areas with a high rate of malaria infestation.
I'd definitely rather see this than pesticides protecting tropical villages and clinics, but it is proof that we live in a very strange world. To add further strangeness, on the Engadget site, there was a link at the bottom: MORE ON THIS TOPIC: The first link was Boeing 747 destroys ballistic missile with laser.
Current Mood: amusedamused
