02:48 am - Hopeful News
I've seen a number of people posting about how bad news has been recently, and so I was encouraged to point out that it's definitely not all bad.

Several people have linked to the article about The City that Ended Hunger, about Brazil’s fourth largest city, Belo Horizonte, where in 1993, a newly elected administration declared food a right of citizenship, and proceeded to work to end hunger in that city. It's worth remembering that Brazil's per capita income is less than 18% that of the US, and in the US hunger is a problem for approximately 13% of the population. The article talks about how the city of Belo Horizonte managed what it did and is well worth reading. It's again worth remembering that most social problems are not in any way insoluble, they are simply not being solved, but they could be.

As another hopeful note, here's a NYT article about a national Gallup poll that recently found
1. For the first time, the percentage of Americans who perceive “gay and lesbian relations” as morally acceptable has crossed the 50 percent mark.

2. Also for the first time, the percentage of men who hold that view is greater than the percentage of women who do.
There were two interesting and hopeful theories by psychologist about why male acceptance of gays and lesbians has increased by more than 20 points over the past 4 years, while female acceptance of gays and lesbians has increased less than 10 points in the same time period.
Men may be becoming more egalitarian in general. As Dr. Kimmel put it: “Men have gotten increasingly comfortable with the presence of, and relative equality of, ‘the other,’ and we’re becoming more accustomed to it. And most men are finding that it has not been a disaster.”
&
Virulent homophobes are increasingly being exposed for engaging in homosexuality.
The first of these would be very good news indeed. I'm certain that the 2nd is a factor and while not as much a cause for joy, the link between strong homophobia and denied homosexual feelings is conformed in at least one study, and this realization is definitely a step forward, and will hopefully eventually also end most of the hatred and fear based on self-loathing. It's a long road, but we are clearly winning the Culture War.

On a related note, here's a discussion of how many good things president Obama has done for GLBT rights - he could definitely do more, but it's a very good start.
