02:36 pm - Awesome car news!
Back in April, teaotter's car wouldn't start - the lights were a bit dim and it almost started, but not quite. It was clearly an electrical problem, and once we got it jump-started, we found out that what we thought was a 10-year car battery was in fact only rated for 7 years, and it was 7 1/2 years old, and in need of replacement. Then, a few days ago, the car was utterly dead, no electrical activity at all. We figured either the mechanic had overlooked some more serious electrical problem or (and this seemed unlikely) the battery was a dud and had completely died after a little over a month. So, with amberite out of town, Becca put the battery from Alice's car in her car to see if the problem was a dead battery, and indeed it was, so getting a replacement will be free. Definitely good news in terms of both convenience and (especially) money. Yay!

I hope I'm wrong, but it could be that your alternator is bad, which would result in the battery going dead because it's not being charged. The easiest way to tell is to check your alternator gauge or "idiot light" on the dashboard. Otherwise, if your new battery also goes dead, then it might well be the alternator.

Nope, they tested it, and the battery is charging normally. Also, Becca told me later that the battery had audibly sloshed when she removed it (which I've never heard a battery do).

The battery *could* charge normally for a while and then cease to - the last one did. So I'd be really careful with that.

Actually, what I meant to say was they checked to see if the alternater was actually charging the battery, and it most definitely was. So, we're left with bad battery or slow short when the car is off as options.

Mine once was messed up because the alternator was over-charging the battery, although that was also the time I knew because of large sulfurous clouds of potentially explosive gas coming out from under the hood. :P I think problems can be more complicated than charging-or-not-charging, is all.
