09:58 pm - Superheroes of Food
We've been going to Ohana Hawaiian Cafe for the last 4 years or so. We started going there shortly after it opened, and it's one of our favorite restaurants. In addition to the fact that almost none of their food contains dairy, they've always both knowledgeable and helpful with what food contains dairy, and what they can do to make things dairy free. We were planning to go there for our anniversary dinner, but amberite was worried, having recently developed (or more accurately, diagnosed) a gluten allergy, and since soy sauce contains wheat, and all of their sauces contain soy sauce, it looked like Alice would have little to eat there beyond side-dishes, dessert, and one main dish (a salt and garlic rubbed chicken). Since Alice loves their tofu with barbecue or teriyaki sauce, she was dubious about going there. However, we decided to try it, with the understanding that if there wasn't anything that looked good to Alice we would go elsewhere.

Tonight, the owner was there, and he's an exceptionally sweet and helpful individual. He said that he has a friend with a gluten allergy and keeps some wheat free soy sauce around to make sauces, and made some teriyaki sauce just for Alice (and gave her the rest to take home). He also said that if we call ahead, they can also make the barbecue sauce, and then checked to make certain what other dishes a gluten free (which includes a really delicious chicken and mung bean noodle soup with lots of ginger). In addition to excellent food at a reasonable price, I've never been to a restaurant where the staff is both as helpful and as consistently nice. When we were getting in the car to leave, Alice said to Becca and I "They're superheroes of food", which is quite true. Definitely the perfect anniversary dinner.

Awesome! That reminds me, I need to import some imitation soy sauce made of gluten that lacks soy. :)
