11:00 pm - Graphic Novel Recommendation: Hereville
My good friend Barry draws comics, he's one of quite a number of comics artists in Portland, and he's really good at it. His first graphic novel Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword was just released by a major publisher and his has a contract for two sequels. The tag-line/subtitle for the first book is "Yet another troll-fighting 11-year-old Orthodox Jewish girl". In addition to excellent art and writing, Barry has written a book that's both kind and humane w/o being in the least bit sappy or naïve.

In any case, I'm writing about it today, because this evening Becca, Alice, and I went down to Powell's books today to see Barry talk about his book, it's always fascinating and nifty to see a good friend being a professional author talking about their book.

In any case, I'm also clearly not the only person who thinks it's excellent – it's getting starred reviews all over the place, here are a couple of the reviews from the school library journal and from The LA Times, and also from Kirkus Reviews. Also, here's some info about the book from Barry's site. While it's obviously too early to tell, it looks possible that Hereville might actually be a big hit, so why not get in the know early and get a copy :)
