03:35 pm - Awesome Cat News +8 ounces!
teaotter & I just got back from a quick checkup of Buddy before he goes in for his 2nd radioiodine treatment on Tuesday. We put him back on his thyroid medicine almost two weeks ago, and he'd lost a couple of ounces as of Monday. However, Becca had also started "assisted feeding" (aka, squirting food into his mouth with a syringe) since the thyroid medicine also reduces his appetite. The results have been impressive - since Monday (5 days ago) he's gained 8 ounces. He's still far too thin, and he'll need to gain back 3 more pounds to make up the weight he lost since June, but I'm now beginning to become confident that he'll actually survive all this, since as far as everyone can tell, the only thing wrong with Buddy is that his thyroid levels are way to high, and require a level of thryoid medicine that upsets his stomach and thus depresses his appetite.

Yay! That's good news. 8 ounces in 5 days is a lot for a cat.

I had a cat with kidney disease, which caused an acid stomach, and the vet recommended 2.5 mg of Famotidine twice a day and it worked wonders for her appetite. You can buy it OTC in a drugstore and split the tablets into the required dose.

The problem is that at high doeses, the thyroid medicine causes nausea in cats, and there don't seem to be much in the way of good anti-nausea meds for cats, or at least none that work on Buddy.
