01:27 am - Christmas + Mechanical Triumph
Christmas was very nice, but also tiring. Becca started the day with a bad headache, and Alice needed to get ready to visit people on the East Coast the next day, and so I did all the cooking and most of the other preparations. The results were thankfully excellent. I'd brined the chicken with water, salt, wine, and lemon juice the night before and then butterflied it and baked it – it took less than an hour to bake and was impressively moist and juicy. The fennel, pear, sausage and onion dressing was also excellent, and I was very pleased with my pumpkin-pecan pie (previous recipe slightly modified and with a gluten free crust). We had xtricks, lupagreenwolf, silverback2001, & erelin, which was a lovely gathering of people who brought both excellent additional food and excellent company.

Then, Alice had to get ready to go to the airport far too early in the morning, I'll miss her a lot. There's far too much traveling over the next few weeks, first she's going to visit people, then in mid January, I need to go and visit my parents, and following that, Becca is going out to visit people on the East Coast. I'm definitely looking forward to February.

As for the triumph, last night after Alice and I did the dishes I turned on the disposal, and while it worked, it made a loud noise. I couldn't see or feel anything stuck inside, so I went to bed and hoped things for have improved in the morning. They hadn't, so with some help from Becca, I found an on-line installation manual, removed it from the sink, pried out the fragment of ceramic mug that had gotten stuck against the edge, and successfully reinstalled it – not all that difficult, but my first real adventure in home plumbing, I hope not to have to do anything like that again, but was very pleased that it worked.
